We are delighted to announce that the annual Bookville Festival will take place for the sixth consecutive year this October.
Details of events will be posted later in the year, but we can promise you an exciting programme, featuring some of the best contemporary children's authors and illustrators.
The 2022 Bookville Festival will include a new version of the hugely popular Bookville Festival Book, online videos, a Bookville exhibition and (fingers crossed) live events.

October 2021
Bookville Festival Brings a Sprinkle of Magical Imagination
Bookville, a festival of books for families and children, celebrates its fifth consecutive year in 2021. Building on the phenomenal success of last year’s book, this year the festival has evolved once again, with an even bigger Bookville Festival in a book with more activity pages and, new for 2021, an exciting programme of 14 online videos. 13,000 copies of this beautifully illustrated free book will be distributed to every primary school and library across Kilkenny city and county during October. There is literally one book for every primary school age child in county Kilkenny. Bookville Festival in a book and the video programme are also available on the Bookville Kilkenny website, www.bookvillekilkenny.com.
According to Arts Officer, Mary Butler, “We had such positive feedback from last year’s activity book that, with Covid restrictions still in place and live events still not an option for primary schools, it was clear that another book was the perfect solution to ensure the continuation of this valuable and widely anticipated festival. The fabulous new video online programme was created to give children a taste of our hugely popular in-person workshops in the safest way possible.”
Bookville Festival in a book includes a variety of fun activities, such as activities as gaeilge, sum colouring, concrete poetry, a crossword on the environment and even a pizza recipe! All the activities are based around 15 of the best contemporary children’s books including books by local authors Carol Ann Treacy with her ever popular, “The little Lost Cat’s Big Adventure in Kilkenny and Brendan McDonald with his new book, “Elephant on the Farm” as well as “Our Wild World” by wildlife expert Éanna Ní Lamhna and “Girls Play too” by athlete and sports presenter, Jacqui Hurley and much more. Laureate na nÓg, Áine Ní Ghlinn wrote the foreword for the book, describing it as, “a sprinkle of magical imagination”. All the books featured are available from local Kilkenny libraries and Kilkenny book shops.
The exciting new video programme consists of 14 free, pre-recorded online videos by Irish and UK children’s book authors and illustrators, with something for all tastes and ages. From creative mindfulness to wildlife frottage art, musical sea exploration, a dive into digital art and a hilarious family comedy, this video programme is not be missed. All the videos will be online Thursday October 14th.
The annual Bookville Festival is a collaboration by the Kilkenny Arts Office and Kilkenny County Council Library Service and supported by Creative Ireland.
Kilkenny Library Service’s County Librarian, Josephine Coyne said, “Our new video programme, along with an even bigger and better activity book means we can once again give teachers and families a fabulous Bookville Festival, even though we are still limited in holding live events. With 13,000 books and the online videos, Bookville can reach into every primary school and home throughout Kilkenny county and will be seen, enjoyed and treasured by thousands of children, their teachers and families.”

Bookville in a book is on its way...
In October 2021, 13,000 books were packed up and delivered to every child in almost 90 primary schools across Kilkenny City & County by Kilkenny Library Service's trusty mobile library driver, Tom (and ably assisted by Laura!).
